THE PORTFOLIO OF

los kawm

I am a creative director who utilizes my education and passion in environmental and political science to capture the co-existence of humans and nature.

My work is a little bit of advocacy work that is centered around humans and nature, fur babies, and fun creative portraits that capture humans at different points of their lives.

I strive to design art that is sustainable, thoughtful, and meaningful while collaborating with individuals who share the same passion and goals as me in educating society in how humans can do better for the Earth.

A PLACE CALLED HOME

This project is centered around human experiences in natural environments. I created a collection of portraits that focused on how humans interact with one another or with themselves on public land. The purpose of this project is to showcase how humans are interconnected to nature through our emotions and experiences.

Each look represents either an emotion or an experience that is related to my memories that was played out and interpreted by my family. Through this project, I want to show that humans of color are allowed to take space on public lands and that we experience similar human emotions and experiences just like White people.

This project is heavily inspired by Dr. Carolynn Finney’s essay, There’s No Place Like Home.

RIP-OFF: THE MISCONCEPTIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY

RIP-OFF: THE MISCONCEPTIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY got its name from my observation of how uneducated, unaware, and uncaring humans are about the way that we are impacting Earth. I wanted this project to educate and bring awareness to viewers about the negative impacts that human consumerism has on biodiversity, climate, waterways, animals/insects, and ultimately, human life. Each curated look discusses these consequences with the last look providing insight on how co-existence with nature is possible through education, accountability, and political/human action.

A huge thank you to Studio Apparatus for sharing their space with me and my team to create art that means the world to me. Thank you to all the models worked with my awkward self, in believing my vision, and for your encouragement. Thank you to my team for putting up with me, helping me put together all the sets, and for being the best hype squad a little shy Asian girlie can ask for.

Most importantly, thank you to Mother Nature for being the biggest inspiration in making this project possible. Your resilience, kindness, and grace knows no bounds and I am grateful to be able to bask in your beauty.
